The département of Charente-Maritime (17) is in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and is bordered by the departments of Gironde, Charente, Deux-Sèvres, Dordogne and Vendée.
Charente-Maritime is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790.
It is named after the Charente River.
